Driver Education for Teens and Adults |
| Licensed to Learn |
AAA's "Licensed to Learn ... The Key to Safe Driving" is the most comprehensive teen driver education program nationwide. The program focuses on three main areas:
- Raise awareness of teen driver safety issues.
- Mandate more behind-the-wheel driving experience for teens, and increase parental involvement in driver training.
- Implement a graduated licensing system in all 50 states to ensure teens are ready - before they receive full driving privileges.
License to Learn includes 30 hours of classroom education and 10 hours of in-car training for teens obtaining their first driver license.
Students:
- Will learn in a classroom environment that focuses on safety not speed of completion.
- In-car training is conducted on a one-on-one basis with a state-licensed driving instructor, who is also a AAA-trained employee.
- Must obtain a NYS learner permit before attending first class.
- Will receive a free basic membership to AAA upon program completion.
NOTE: Teens that complete the License to Learn program will NOT receive the MV-285 "blue card" to obtain night driving privileges.
|
Interactive. Classroom lessons encourage two-way communication between instructors and students, as do the one-on-one in-car training sessions.
Structured. To help students stay focused, class sizes are restricted. In-car training is conducted using set routes with carefully designed learning objectives so students are sure to gain the needed skills.
Comprehensive. The curriculum includes a "learn by doing" approach, based on research and developed to target specific areas known to be the cause of teen driving collisions.

Pre-licensing courses are offered every weekend in the Syracuse, Rochester and Buffalo areas. Hourly private driving lessons can be provided by AAA for an additional charge. If you are under 18, your parent or guardian will need to certify that you have completed 20 hours of practice driving before you are eligible to apply for a junior license.
The 5-hour pre-licensing course covers the following driving fundamentals:
- The DMV point system
- The highway transportation system
- The laws of physics as they relate to driving and the effects of restraining devices
- Defensive driving techniques
- What to do in case of a collision
- The effects of driver attitude, emotions, and skills
- Alcohol and drugs, and their effects on driving
Completion of this five-hour course earns you a MV-278 pre-licensing course certificate. You must provide the certificate number when you schedule your road test with the New York State Department of Motor Vehicles and also present the certificate to the examiner on the day of your test. The cost of the class is $30.

| Point & Insurance Reduction Class (6 Hour) |
Point & Insurance Reduction Program (PIRP) is a six-hour course sponsored by AAA and approved by the New York State Department of Motor Vehicles. Upon completion of this course, you may be eligible to reduce as many as four (4) points from your driving record. Additionally, graduates often receive a 10% reduction on the collision and liability portion of their automobile and motorcycle insurance premiums.
If you take a state-approved defensive driving course, you'll benefit by:
- Learning to take a proactive approach to driving safety
- Having up to four points reduced from your driving record
- Refresh and sharpen your driving knowledge
- Review safe driving tips and vehicle and traffic laws
Point reduction applies only to points assessed for violations that occurred within the 18 months immediately before course completion. It does not affect points for earlier violations, and cannot be used as "credit" against future violations or points. If your license has already been revoked or suspended, or if a violation hearing has already been scheduled, point reduction will not affect that action.
Points may be reduced only once in any 18-month period. The DMV point system and insurance company "point" systems are separate and not related. Point reduction on your driving record does not affect points assigned by your insurance company for violations and accidents.
